Fourtune and Fate of Romeo and Juliet

In Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare uses personification to create his theme of fortune and fate throughout the play. His use of personification of Night and Death also create the theme of love and hate.

In Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare personifies Night to create fortune and fate, as well as the theme of love and hate. The personification of night is used in the quote “Come, Night, come, Romeo, come thou day in night,”(Shakespeare, III, ii, 17) said by Juliet. Juliet wants night to come so that Romeo can come. She is also talking about Romeo, and how he is her day but he comes to her at night. Juliet is also using Night for two meanings, she wants night time to come but she is also referring to Romeo being her knight. So night is when her knight(knight in shining armor then) Romeo can come and see her. The personification of Night creates the theme of love and hate because Juliet’s parents hate Romeo and the Montague’s, and the Montague’s hate Juliet and the Capulet’s. The hate of Romeo and Juliet’s parents means that their love cannot be discovered or seen, so they can only meet at night. The fate us that Romeo and Juliet’s love for one another cannot be shared, shown or expressed in front of anyone, but the fortune is that they share their love anyway in the cover of night.

In Romeo and Juliet the personification of Death is found in the quote “O son, the night before thy wedding day Hath Death lain with thy wife. There she lies, Flower as she was, deflowered by him. Death is my son-in-law, Death is my heir, My daughter he hath wedded. I will die, And leave him all; life, living, all is Death’s.”(Shakespeare IIII, v, 35-39) said by Capulet to Paris. He is referring to Death as his son-in-law, for wedding and taking his beautiful flower of a girl away from him. This personification of Death is used to create the theme of love and hate, with fortune and fate. This death is fortune for Romeo and Juliet because it is a faked death so that she may escape and run away with Romeo. It is fate for her family because they think Juliet is actually dead and it is a tragic thing to happen right before her wedding. This creates the theme of love and hate because Juliet’s parents hate Romeo and the Montague’s, but Juliet loves Romeo so she fakes her death to be with her love without hate. Because Romeo is banished and many people hate him for killing Tybalt, they have to secretly run away together so that he is not killed himself. The fortune and fate of this is that for the fortune of Romeo and Juliet’s love Juliet uses and fakes death, but the fate is that Romeo was not told in time so when he found her sleeping he thinks she was dead so he kills himself. When Juliet wakes up she sees what has happened she kills herself too.
